1st Grade Syllabus
Course Objectives
Reading/Phonics
Using the Reading Street program, first graders will use a simple, logical phonics system while in both independent and group settings. Phonics will be taught mainly by orally teaching and reviewing the normal sounds a letter says, as well as the special sounds by grouping letters together. Students will memorize the sounds so that they can quickly apply them to new words and thus expand their reading horizons. Emphasis will also be made on comprehension of reading selections.
Mathematics
A variety of materials will be used to understand the beginning concepts of math. The students will begin learning how to count 1-1000, number writing, reading numbers, learning place value, addition and subtraction, problem solving, using money, geometry, logical thinking, graphs, calendar skills, using a ruler, time to 5 min., fractions, measurement, and temperature.
Grammar & Writing
Using the Reading Street program, first graders will establish a solid foundation of grammar by beginning to identify parts of a sentence as well as the overall sentence structure. They will also develop an understanding of the rules of capitalization and punctuation.
Spelling
Spelling consists of lists with corresponding activities to reinforce what has been read in each short story. There are phonetic words and challenge words in each list. The students will say, spell, and say the words. They will also play games, write the lists, and use the words in sentences. Lists should be studied at home at least twice a week, and tests will usually be given on Fridays unless otherwise stated.
Science
We will use the students' natural inquisitiveness and joy of discovery as the basis for further investigation into beauty, order, intricacy, and variety of God's world. They will investigate many different subject matters such as living and non-living things, growth and change, habitats, the earth, weather and seasons, matter, motion and energy, and their senses.
Bible
We will focus on the many gifts of love provided for us by God. Emphasis will be on aspects of creation, our families, friends, possessions, Jesus Christ and God's care for us. There will be a weekly/monthly character trait in order to help the students learn to be more like Jesus. There will also be a weekly memory verse.
Handwriting
The students will learn and practice the correct formation of letters and apply this skill to both formal and informal writing assignments.
Social Studies
We will use student-centered activities so that the children will learn about their local surroundings (family, neighborhood, church, city and state) and broaden their outlook (country, continent, and planet) to those things around them. The students' understanding of history (Pilgrims, Christopher Columbus, Native Americans, etc.) will be enriched using multi-media curriculum as well as timelines, globes, and maps. The students will also expand their thoughts about duty to one's country, citizenship and patriotism by studying about the U.S. Presidents, Fourth of July, and symbols of the USA.
Specials (Art, Music, Spanish, PE)
Objectives to be defined by the designated teachers.
Major Projects
Memory Challenge
Our first grade memory challenge is addition and subtraction facts 0-10. We will work on this in class, but please review these facts with your child.
Community Projects
During Social Studies, the students will be learning about their community. This project will allow them to look at their own street, neighborhood, community, city, county, state, and country, and how they all relate to each place by size.
Cultural Project
In the month of February we will be looking at how other countries are both like our country and different (compare and contrast). Each child will pick a country of their heritage to study and create a poster board showing some required information. Then the same information will be compared and contrasted to the United States using Venn diagram.
Book Reports
There will be a book report due in both the 3rd and 4th quarters. These will be age- and ability-appropriate with further details to come at a later date.
Homework Procedures
Homework will be given daily. Wednesday's homework will entail only Math. All assignments will be written into the student's agenda. Parents are to sign the agenda each night in order to help with communication between school and home. Homework folders will be put into a homework tray each morning when the child unpacks. The child will get a sticker each day that the homework is done and placed in the tray.
Homework grade will be lowered if turned in late without prior permission. If there is some reason your child will not be able to get homework done (ex. not feeling well), please let inform the teacher so we can work with you.
Grading Plan
Homework will usually be graded with a check plus (if everything is done as asked and turned in on time), a check (if work is not quite up to a check plus), a check minus (if it is not satisfactory work), and a zero (if not acceptable).
Classroom Rules
The students will develop the class rules the first week of school. These will be standard rules of respect and obedience.
